Guerrilla Girls

Guerrilla Girls is an anonymous group of feminist artists dedicated to fighting sexism and racism in the art world. The group was formed in New York in 1985 with the mission of highlighting racial and gender inequality within the artistic community. They use cultural disruptions in the form of posters, books, billboards, and public appearances to expose discrimination and corruption. To remain anonymous, members wear gorilla masks and use pseudonyms that reference deceased women artists. According to GG1, identities are hidden because the issues matter more than individual identities: “In the end, we wanted the focus to be on the issues, not on our personalities or our work.”
