Alessandro Costanzo

(Catania, 1991) Lives and works between Catania and Brussels. He studied New Languages of Painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino. In 2016, he completed the two-year specialization in Painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania.

Sculpture and installation using different media are the primary modes of his work. His experiential approach to materials is supported by a peculiar scientific attitude, leading to an investigation of temporal and spatial dynamics in close relation to human biological processes. The conceptual direction of his research has led, in his current ceramics, to the exploration of a specific surface dimension and the development of work that pays attention to the skin and dermis of shell-like forms of organic elements and exoskeletons.

This relationship with the surface, together with the concepts of “threshold” and “boundary,” is also connected to his interest in social issues concerning humans and technological automation.

It is a heterogeneous research practice, a constant work in progress of thought that investigates by constructing and deconstructing different aspects related to the contemporary self. Identity, places, memory, and the relationship with time and space merge in a kind of traversal of contemporary fluid experience.
